TipFinder v1 Released

It hasn’t been long (less then a week!) since this little project kick started out of no where, but i’m gonna release version 1 tonight – it’s basically a beta version, has just enough functionality to view nearby tips via Foursquare.

Purpose of TipFinder

I initially started using Foursquare on my iPhone. A few times at work, I’d get sick of going to the same restaurants/cafes/bars etc, so i started utilizing the ‘Nearby Tips’ functionality on the Foursquare app. It was great! I found so many cool and delicious (and some shady) places, but it was exciting. I would hit the Nearby Tips function and wait for it to load all the tips left at surrounding venues and pick one which fancies me.

When I switched to Foursquare for Android, it was lacking this functionality (yet to be implemented?) so I figured, why wait for them, ill just do it myself. Now I can once again, happily browse for more interesting places.

I hope this summarizes my drive for developing this little app, and hopefully teaching you a new way of finding that new favorite cafe!

Key points about TipFinder

  • You must have an internet connection
  • You must have GPS access
  • SDCard on the device makes the application run smoother – due to the images
  • Does NOT require a foursquare account to use

Things being work on for version 2

  • a new name? tipfinder sounds lame. lol
  • an icon/logo
  • Less accurate but ability to track location via Wifi network if GPS does not exist
  • optimize how images load without SDCard so it doesn’t lag so much
  • an onclick handler which redirects the application to google maps when a tip is selected
  • a footer to display current address
  • possible release to android market

I hope you enjoy testing/playing around with my app. Start hunting for those cool places in your city! If you encounter any problems or wish to leave feedback, please reply to this blog or tweet me @jamesgiang and i’ll get back to you asap!

Privacy

TipFinder DOES NOT record or track any of your data – so don’t be freaked out about privacy concerns. If you are truly paranoid, give me a message and i’ll shed some light.
